Kelsey and Jess were inspired to become entrepreneurs by the cats from a local animal shelter; for over three years, Jess volunteered cleaning cat kennels, socializing cats and doing laundry, and Kelsey worked at the animal shelter running the volunteer program, special events, fundraising, spay/neuter clinics and other projects.

          Toys and catnip always seemed to bring a little happiness to the cats awaiting their forever home. During their time with these kitties, Kelsey and Jess studied what toys went over the best with each cat. They also noticed that the toys were typically of low quality and did not withstand more than a few times in the laundry. Due to this, the shelter typically was low on donated cat toys and cats sometimes went without a toy.

 

          Kelsey and Jess wanted to make sure at least every cat had a toy. So Kelsey and Jess started brainstorming cat toy ideas; Jess dusted off her grandmother’s sewing machine and started making popular basics including the rattle snake, fleece balls and mice. With time and practice, Kelsey and Jess came up with toys that were durable and enticing to most cats.

 

          As they improved their designs, they incorporated their values into the toys: sourcing sustainable materials (with a focus on hemp, organic and recycled materials), using materials made in the USA and giving back to nonprofit animal shelters (business with purpose).  The business grew into what is now Hemp Cat Toys & More, helping fur babies and the environment one toy at a time. Kelsey and Jess hope to expand the business to help even more pets by educating the public about animal welfare and the benefits of using hemp products in toys, treats and more!
